Botox Q & A

How does Botox work?

Botox contains a purified strain of a botulinum toxin. This safe, effective, and FDA-approved injectable works by interacting with cell signaling that leads to muscle contractions and twitching. The skin appears smooth and frown and furrow lines melt away because the facial muscles are relaxed by the Botox injection. This muscle relaxation effect is not permanent. But the longer you do Botox, the LESS often you have to do it because the muscles become less and less strained over time.

What can Botox treat?

Botox is the most effective way to get rid of wrinkles and ridges of the face. Your Botox treatment can dramatically reduce the appearance of:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between your brows

Your entire Botox treatment from beginning to end usually takes about 10 minutes. Aside from a little slight redness and swelling, you won’t have any downtime or a lengthy recovery. When Botox is injected correctly, you get a natural softening of lines without creating a ‘frozen look.’

Is Botox permanent?

No, Botox takes several days to work and the results last 12-16 weeks. The longer that you keep up with regular Botox injections, the longer the Botox lasts. This means that you may need injections every 12 weeks for the first year and then can space your injections of to 16- 20 weeks in the years to follow.

To further help you experience superior anti-aging benefits, your practitioner at Kind Dermatology and Medical Spa may even suggest pairing your Botox injections with JUVÉDERM®. This top-of-the-line dermal filler replaces lost volume and helps fill in lines and contour your face, so you can look years younger.

Are Botox injections painful?

Depending on which area (or areas) you’d like to target, your Botox session can include multiple injections in your treatment area. Although not painful, each of these injections can sting a little just because of the small needle used for Botox.

At Kind Dermatology and Medical Spa, we often several options to make your Botox experience as painless and comfortable as possible. Most people don’t need numbing cream or Nitronox, but we offer both. Numbing or lidocaine cream takes at least 30 minutes to work. If you choose to use numbing cream, please come to your visit 30-45 minutes early so that the staff can apply the numbing cream in advance. Nitronox, otherwise known as laughing gas, is something you breathe in during the injections. It has a calming effect so that your injections seem painless. Also, it wears off in eight minutes so that you are able to drive after your appointment.
