Acne Q & A

What causes acne?

Acne, such as pimples, blackheads, and cysts, form when your hair follicles become plugged with oil, environmental debris, and dead skin cells. Your acne breakout may stem from:

  • Excess oil production
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Bacterial overgrowth and inflammation

High glycemic index diets (high sugar/ low fiber food), increased stress, and poor sleep can all worsen acne breakouts, but they don’t cause acne alone. Acne has several root causes and patterns. Dermatologists are trained to treat the root of acne to give you quick relief and lasting results.

How is acne treated?

At Kind Dermatology and Medical Spa, the team of board-certified physicians and skin care experts offer a wide variety of fast-acting and effective acne treatments. Depending on the severity of your acne, your treatment plan may include:

  • Prescriptions medicated creams gels, oral antibiotics, and Accutane
  • Kojic, azelaic acid, and hydroquinone fading treatments
  • Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Prescription-strength salicylic and glycolic acid chemical peels
  • Red Light photofacials
  • Resurfacing laser treatments

Plus, if you have acne scarring, your dedicated practitioner can help smooth the texture of your skin, decrease redness, and minimize the appearance of browns spots with skin care regimens, chemical peels, and laser skin treatments. Cynosure® Icon™ laser treatments remove brown spots and stimulate new collagen, so those lingering acne scars become a thing of the past.

When will I have results after my acne treatment?

No matter which type of acne treatment you start, it’s going to take time for your skin to heal. After all, acne and acne scarring did not happen overnight.

Topical treatments, such as at-home prescription creams and gels can get skin looking better in as little as two weeks. Prescription pills and diet changes can stop the breakout cycle. In-office injections can soothe cystic acne in as little as 12-24 hours if you are having an especially bad breakout. After we get your breakouts under control, we can start correcting brown spots and scars.

If laser acne scar treatments with Icon are part of your skin care plan, your acne scars should start to fade in as little as two to four weeks, with optimal results after completing a personalized package of treatments over several months.
