Xeomin

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is the most recent neuromodulators to prevent or reduce muscle contractions that cause facial wrinkles. It is similar to Botox but it lacks a protein found in Botox. After using Botox for several years, some people can become ‘immune’ to it. This means that the Botox no longer works. Why does this occur? People can become ‘immune’ to Botox because their body forms an antibody against the protein with Botox. Botox is wrapped in a carrier protein and after many Botox treatments, the body can form an antibody against this carrier protein.

What can People do who are ‘Immune’ to Botox?

People who no longer get the desired effect from Botox should try Xeomin. Xeomin is similar to Botox in that it targets the muscle-nerve connection, but it does NOT have the carrier protein. This means that Xeomin will work for people who have an anti-body to Botox because Xeomin does not contain the protein.

How long does Xeomin Last?

Similar to Botox, Xeomin will last at least 12-weeks but maybe longer. After the procedure, it takes at least 1 week to see the effects of the Xeomin. The longer that you continue to get Xeomin regularly, you will notice that you need it less often. This is because Xeomin softens the muscles of the face. The softer and less tense these muscles get, the less often they need to be treated.

How is Xeomin Administered?

Xeomin is injected into the muscle using a tiny needle. It is important to inject the right amount of Xeomin into the right muscles to prevent getting an unnatural ‘frozen look,’ overly heavy, droopy eyebrows, or a ‘Spoc-like’ eyebrow look. Most people tolerate Xeomin well and have little bruising.

What should I do before by Xeomin appointment?

To minimize bruising, we advise that you stop all blood thinners at least 5-days before your treatment. Do NOT stop a blood thinner is you have been directed by a physician to take a blood thinner after having had a stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or if you have an irregular heartbeat or artificial heart valve. Also, please stop over the counter pain medication and supplements that thin the blood. Pain medications to stop include Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, Aspirin, Midol, etc. Nutritional supplements to stop include Vitamin E, Fish-oil, Gingko, Garlic, and Ginseng. You may resume these medications and supplements 2 days after the procedure.

Benefits of Xeomin

One of the key benefits is the fact that Xeomin is preventative as well as a corrective. Patients who use Xeomin get immediate benefits because it softens the wrinkles they already have, but it prevents futures wrinkles as well. The age of 45-60 years of age is called the ‘ageless window,’ because if you take preventative measures, you may not appear to age during this time. Xeomin must be used with caution in people with neuro-muscular disorders like Multiple Sclerosis and Myasthenia Gravis, so tell your physician if you have these conditions. Since there are several less neuromodulators on the market, it is important to discuss your options with a medical physician. During the initial consultation, you will be given an explanation as to what happens to the face as we age and the opportunity to view before and after photos. You will need to discuss with your physician if Xeomin is the correct corrective option for you.
